Retro Gaming vs Modern Televisions

The elephant in the room

Throughout all this we've been trying to emulate the picture given on a CRT based 4:3 television. To which there is a very obvious solution; why not just buy a CRT TV!?

It's a perfectly valid and sensible option. There's no requirement to make it generate scan lines because they're a natural byproduct of CRT displays. There's no lag because you're not processing the signal. Basically, it's a no-brainer *if* you've got the space for one.

You can pick up an old CRT TV for next to nothing on eBay. My personal preference are the Sony Trinitrons, and I regret greatly throwing away my old 21" that was still working perfectly only a few years ago.

However if you've made it this far into this article, you're a geek and a standard telly isn't going to do. Now these bad boys are for the serious: Do a search on eBay for Sony PVM or BVM. Which stands for Professional Video Monitor or the very pinnacle of CRT tech; the Broadcast Video Monitor.

Now big ones (20" or so) are not cheap, and you'll really need to know what you're doing when it comes to setup. But for old consoles, this has to be the ultimate. Input will be RGB via BNCs and you can get a cable made up specifically to go from this to an RGB SCART socket. I just wish I had the room.
