BERT 25
Scotland Road Trip VIII

I going to deviate slightly from my usual post BERT review. It was brilliant, the weather was stunning, the company awesome, etc. But this time I want to actually get back to the subject of this blog/thread/thing; the MX-5.

I've come to the conclusion that the MX-5 (including my previous ones) is a tough little car. As I've mentioned before it is good at everything but excels at nothing (other than being good at everything). But it can take abuse like few other cars out there.

These trips can ask a lot of a car. Bumpstops get hit, bottoms get scraped (often with accompanying sparks...), brakes get cooked and wheels get bent. This trip was no different in that in trying to avoid bottom scrapage I managed to drive through the biggest hole known to man and bottom out the car on it's sill, ...twice. Not to mention it's often asked to mix with much more capable machinery and it always holds it own. But you do have to really lean on it.

All the while it usually comes out of it mostly unscathed. Yes I've replaced the suspension, brakes and wheels, but overall the car is still in mechanically great shape even after 70+k hard miles. Sure it has marks, but most of them were still from it's previous life as an unloved shopping trolley. I've added to them, but it still scrubs up will with a bit of polish and though it may have had hiccups, it's never let me down completely.

I suppose that's it really, I've never had any qualms about bringing it on these trips. It's never given me any notions that it wouldn't be awesome fun, then get me home at the end of it. There's a lot to be said for that.
